Injectable Implant Aftercare

Megan Paige | London, Ontario | Sarnia, Ontario

Congratulations on your new upgrade! Because this installation was performed using a needle rather than a scalpel, your healing process should be relatively quick and straightforward. However, your implant is a foreign object, and how you treat it during the first few weeks will determine how well it settles.

Please read and follow these instructions carefully to ensure clean healing.

The Healing Timeline

  • Initial Surface Healing: 2 to 4 weeks. (The puncture hole will close and heal during this time).
  • Deep Tissue Settling: Up to a few months. (Your body will build a pocket of collagen around the glass or biopolymer capsule to permanently anchor it in place).

The Golden Rule: Leave It Alone

The absolute most important rule of implant aftercare is do not play with it.

Do not push on it, poke it, or try to test the chip right away. Moving the implant while the tissue is trying to heal and encapsulate it will cause migration (the chip moving from its ideal placement) or prevent it from settling securely.

Daily Cleaning & Care

  • Keep it Dry: Keep the area completely dry for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Wash Gently: After the first 48 hours, you may wash the area gently during your normal shower routine using a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not scrub the puncture site.
  • Pat Dry: Always pat the area completely dry with a clean paper towel. Do not use cloth towels, as they harbor bacteria and can snag the healing skin.
  • Sterile Saline: You may use a sterile wound wash saline spray 1 to 2 times a day if needed, but do not over-clean the area.

What is Normal?

  • Swelling & Bruising: Minor swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the installation site are completely normal for the first few days to a week.
  • Pinching Sensation: You may feel a slight pinching or tight sensation when moving the area as the tissue heals around the capsule.

The “Do Nots” (Crucial for the first 2-4 weeks)

  • NO Submerging: Do not submerge the piercing in bodies of water. This means no baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, or saunas for at least 2 to 4 weeks to prevent severe infection.
  • NO Tight Clothing/Gear: Avoid wearing tight clothing, watches, gloves, or heavy gear that puts direct pressure on the implant site.
  • NO Touching with Unwashed Hands: Never touch the puncture site or the surrounding area without thoroughly washing your hands with antibacterial soap first.
  • NO Harsh Chemicals: Do not apply rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, polysporin, or any ointments to the puncture wound. These trap bacteria and damage healing cells.

When to Contact Me or a Doctor

While rare, infections or placement complications can happen if aftercare is not followed or if your anatomy shifts. Contact me or seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Nerve Irritation: Any persistent tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation radiating from the implant site down your hand or fingers.
  • Signs of Infection: Severe, throbbing pain that worsens after the first few days, excessive redness, or red streaks spreading from the site.
  • Abnormal Discharge: Green or dark yellow pus/discharge (a small amount of clear or white lymph fluid is normal).
  • Excessive Heat: The implant site feels abnormally hot to the touch.
