Getting a new piercing is an exciting adventure, and proper piercing prep can make all the difference for a smooth experience. This guide will walk you through what to do to prep for your piercing, ensuring you’re ready for a comfortable and successful session. As a professional piercer with 12 years of experience (and just as many years of personal experience getting pierced!), I’ve seen firsthand how proper preparation can make a huge difference in your comfort, the piercing process itself, and most importantly, how beautifully your new piercing heals. Think of it as laying the foundation for a healthy, happy piercing.

While getting pierced might seem straightforward, a little proactive preparation goes a long way. Let’s talk about how you can set yourself up for a smooth, positive experience and a great start to your piercing journey.

The Foundations of Good Piercing Prep

Your body is about to undergo a minor, controlled trauma, and being in the best possible state will help it heal efficiently. Here’s what you should focus on:

Prioritize Your Health:

Be Well-Rested: Get a good night’s sleep before your appointment. Being tired can make you more sensitive to pain and stress.

Eat a Solid Meal: Have a substantial meal a couple of hours before your piercing. Low blood sugar can make you feel lightheaded, nauseous, or even cause you to pass out. Keep your energy up!

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your piercing. Good hydration is beneficial for your overall health and can contribute to better healing.

Avoid Alcohol and Excessive Caffeine: Please refrain from alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before your piercing appointment. Alcohol can thin your blood, which might increase bleeding. While a little caffeine is fine, too much can make you feel jittery and heighten your sensitivity.

Postpone if Sick: If you’re feeling under the weather, running a fever, or just not at your best, it’s always wise to reschedule your piercing. Your body needs to focus its energy on healing, not fighting off an illness.

Focus on Hygiene:

Shower Before Your Appointment: Arrive at the studio fresh and clean. This is respectful to your piercer and helps maintain a sterile environment.

Clean the Area (Gently): While I will thoroughly clean and prepare the piercing area at the studio, you can do your part by ensuring the general area is clean beforehand. Avoid harsh scrubs or irritants directly on the skin you plan to have pierced.

Piercing Prep for Sensitive Areas

For piercings in more sensitive or intimate areas like nipples or “below the belt” (genital) piercings, extra attention to hygiene is key:

You Must Be 18+: Please note that nipple and genital piercings are strictly for clients aged 18 and older, no exceptions, even with parental consent.

Thorough but Gentle Cleaning: On the day of your appointment, ensure you’ve had a thorough shower and cleaned the area to be pierced gently but effectively. Use a mild, unscented soap.

Comfortable/Can Get Messy Underwear: For genital piercings, wear clean, comfortable, breathable underwear (cotton is often best) to your appointment and for the initial healing period. This can help minimize irritation. Be aware things here are vascular. They can, and will likely bleed for a bit.

Hair Removal (Optional, but often helpful): If you typically shave or trim the area, you can do so as part of your regular grooming routine before your appointment. Just be sure to avoid any nicks or irritation that day. If you don’t typically remove hair, please don’t start a new routine right before your piercing, as it could irritate the skin. We can trim as needed at the studio.

What to Bring & What to Wear

Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area you’re getting pierced. For example, if you’re getting an ear piercing, tie your hair back. If it’s a navel piercing, wear something with a loose waistband.

Valid Photo ID: This is a must! You’ll need valid government-issued photo identification to confirm your age. You must be 16 years old to sign for a piercing yourself. However, please remember that nipple and genital piercings require you to be 18+. For those under 16, I do perform piercings with valid parent or legal guardian consent, provided they are present and both you and your parent/guardian have your own valid photo IDs.

Water or Juice: Staying hydrated is important. Feel free to bring a water bottle or juice to sip on before and after your piercing.

A Friend for Support (Optional): Sometimes having a friend with you can help ease any nerves, especially for your first piercing. Just be mindful of studio policies regarding guests in the piercing area.

Your Questions! Don’t hesitate to write down any questions you have about the piercing itself, the jewelry, or the aftercare. I’m here to provide all the information and reassurance you need.
