Getting a tattoo is a permanent decision, and preparing properly can make all the difference in your comfort, my ability to do my best work, and the overall outcome of your tattoo. Let’s walk through what you can expect when you choose a professional studio like mine, and how to prepare for your very first tattoo.
What to Expect During Your First Tattoo Session with a Professional
When you choose a reputable artist and studio, your tattoo experience will generally follow these key steps:
- Welcome & Paperwork: When you arrive, you’ll be greeted and will fill out necessary consent forms. I ensure every client is of legal age and understands the process. This is also a perfect time for you to ask any questions you might have!
- Final Design Confirmation & Pricing: We’ll confirm your design and discuss the final price. While we give a rough estimate during the initial quote, the exact size and placement on the day of your appointment allow us to finalize the cost. Once you’re happy with everything, payment for the tattoo will be processed upfront.
- Moving to the Tattoo Area: After handling the administrative details, we’ll head to the private, sterile tattoo area in the back.
- Skin Preparation & Stencil Placement: The area to be tattooed will be thoroughly cleaned with rubbing alcohol, and shaved if necessary. Then, I’ll apply “stencil stuff” and meticulously place the temporary stencil outline of your tattoo onto your skin. This is your crucial moment to confirm the exact placement, size, and orientation. Please, speak up if something doesn’t feel quite right! Even after the initial placement, if you’re thinking, “Oh it’s pretty good but I wonder if I should place it here instead” don’t be afraid to ask. We can move the stencil as many times as we want. A professional artist will always ensure you’re completely satisfied before moving forward.
- The Tattooing Process: This is where the magic happens! I will apply ink (primarily composed of organic pigment, distilled water, witch hazel, alcohol) using a wireless pen tattoo machine. You’ll hear a quite buzzing from the machine and feel the sensation of the needles. It’s often described as a consistent scratching or stinging.
- Breaks & Comfort: Don’t be afraid to ask for breaks if you need them, especially for longer sessions. Your comfort is paramount to me! Hydrate if you can, and consider bringing a small, non-messy snack for longer sessions to keep your energy up.
- Initial Aftercare Discussion: Once the tattoo is complete, I will apply sterile gauze pads as an initial bandage and thoroughly explain all the immediate aftercare instructions. This is incredibly important for proper healing, so please listen carefully and ask any and all questions – I’m here to ensure you know exactly how to care for your new art.
How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Appointment
Preparation is key to a smooth and positive tattoo experience. Here’s 10 things you can do, to get ready:
- Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Being well-rested helps your body manage pain and stress better. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep the night before.
- Eat a Solid Meal: Have a substantial meal a couple of hours before your appointment. Low blood sugar can make you feel lightheaded, nauseous, or even cause you to pass out during the tattoo process.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Well-hydrated skin can take ink more effectively.
- Avoid Alcohol and Excessive Caffeine: Refrain from alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before your tattoo. Alcohol thins your blood, which can lead to excessive bleeding during the tattoo, potentially impacting the ink’s vibrancy. While a little caffeine might be part of your routine, excessive amounts can make you jittery and more sensitive to pain.
- Moisturize Your Skin: For a few days before your appointment, moisturize the area where you’ll be tattooed. Healthy, hydrated skin is easier to work on and provides a better canvas
- Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area. Think about how you’ll be sitting or lying down for an extended period.
- Stay Clean: Shower before your appointment. Arriving fresh and clean is respectful to your artist and helps maintain a sterile environment.
- Bring Entertainment Or A Friend (Optional): For longer sessions, bringing headphones, a book, or a tablet it can help pass time quicker.
- Communicate: If you’re feeling nervous, lightheaded, or uncomfortable at any point, tell your artist immediately. A professional like myself is here to support you!
- Have Your ID Ready: You’ll need valid photo identification to confirm your age. To sign for yourself, you must be 18 years old. I do tattoo clients as young as 16 years old, provided a parent or legal guardian is present with their own valid photo ID to co-sign the consent forms. Please note that tattoo placement and design can also be age-dependent; there are certain areas or themes I won’t tattoo on minors, but we can always discuss this during your consultation.
